I used to catch gudgeon by an old stone, humpbacked bridge in Ireland when I was a lad. But not since then have I had the pleasure. That is until I fished the Test. There were many fish caught that day: greedy out-of-season trout, grayling galore, spiky perch, big dace, and my personal best roach (right at the end of the session) but it was the gudgeon that drew the biggest smile. Wikipedia describes the gudgeon as a gregarious species. If there was ever a more sociable fish, than I have yet to meet it.
