A nice crusty loaf, still warm with a fluffy middle and a nutty nice. Few things are finer. It’s surely the best thing since sliced bread.
As a bait, bread is extraordinarily versatile, and only hard-nosed predators will turn down a chunk. As the days begin to warm, most anglers are looking to use the crust itself on the hook. Fish begin to mooch in the warm surface layers, and carp in particular are suckers for a floating morsel.
Sometimes fish will compete in open water, and a loaf doesn’t last very long, whereas a single bait on the nose of a tenting carp in the lily pads will often get a response. Just watch out for the ducks.
